The Need
Newark, NJ is a typical underserved urban school district. After volunteering for
several years in community based organizations providing academic tutoring,
We Will has established a math tutoring project through the Newark Public
Schools Office of Extended School Day Programs. For the second consecutive year We Will is
engaging in direct academic support for the current fourth grade math curriculum
at The Chancellor Avenue School in Newark.
The Response
Students at The Pingry School in Martinsville, New Jersey will partner with We Will for
this project. The effort began with engaging a faculty advisor from The Pingry
School. We Will is recruiting Pingry's qualified math students. Pingry
teachers will be asked to support We Will by getting their strongest math students
involved as tutors. Students accepted as tutors will be sent congratulatory
letters and invited to attend a pizza party where the faculty advisor and the
Site Coordinator will speak to them about the importance of the commitment
they have made.
The Tutoring Project will run on a 10 week cycle. There will be a commitment
of one and a half hours a session, twice a week for ten weeks totaling thirty
hours of service. Tutors must attend a training seminar, date to be announced.
Tutors will be responsible to fill out forms tracking tutees' progress.
Results
Last year's tutoring efforts saw our fourth grade students' standardized test scores
rise by 8 percent! We look forward to building on that success this school year.
Goals
We believe we can help close the achievement gap that afflict urban
public education. By providing direct academic support and mentoring we believe
We Will make a difference in the lives of these children. We encourage other
high schools to use this project as a template and implement it with their
own students. We Will assist, help organize, and train any high schools
interested in joining our team or building their own partnership with another
elementary school.
